Why is Jack Butland at the Euro’s?

While I have nothing against Jack Butland, is he really the better option to have on the bench than Celtic’s Fraser Forster? The only level the 19 year old has played consistently at is in League 2, with Cheltenham Town making 24 appearances during the past season. While most would agree that the SPL is a league lacking much quality,  most would concur that Celtic would at least be in the top half Championship side or maybe even a bottom half Premier League one. Forster has been first choice for them for the last two seasons and has undoubted experience at a high level.

Last season Celtic also played in the Europa League, being drawn in a group with Atletico Madrid, Udinese and Rennes. While Celtic struggled, winning just one game, surely playing against the likes of Radamal Falcao and Antonio di Natale has to count for something? Apparently not. Roy Hodgson is of the opinion that the experience Butland gained facing off with the likes of Lewis Grabban and Adebayo Akinfenwa counts for more.

That said, at the age of 24, Forster is still young and does have a Engalnd future. Despite missing out on a place in the Euros, will most likely make the Olympics squad. This could turn out to be a blessing in disguise as Butland will most likely not touch a ball in Poland & Ukraine, Forster will play most of the Team GB’s games.
